Phantom is the most popular self-custody wallet for Solana, with over 17 million monthly users. Setup takes under 5 minutes. Most guides skip the most important first decision: seedless login (Apple or Google plus a PIN, no seed phrase required) or the traditional backup path. This guide covers both so you can choose the right one before you start.
What Is Phantom Wallet?
Phantom is a non-custodial wallet, meaning only you control your assets. Phantom cannot freeze your account, seize your funds, or reverse your transactions. If you're new to this distinction, our guide to custodial vs non-custodial wallets explains the difference.
Initially famous as the premier wallet for Solana, Phantom has expanded to support eight blockchain networks: Solana, Ethereum, Base, Polygon, Sui, Monad, Bitcoin, and HyperEVM. You can access Phantom as a mobile app for iOS and Android, or as a browser extension for Chrome, Brave, and Edge via the Chrome Web Store (Chrome recommended; Firefox support has been discontinued).
Phantom serves more than 17 million monthly active users and holds over $25 billion in self-custodied assets. Backed by Sequoia and Paradigm at a $3 billion valuation, it is one of the most established self-custody wallets available. Built-in features include native token swaps and direct SOL staking. Despite its multi-chain expansion, Phantom remains Solana-first, with the deepest Solana DeFi integration of any beginner-friendly wallet today.
How to Set Up Phantom Wallet: Seedless or Seed Phrase?
The modern version of Phantom offers two distinct setup paths. You need to choose before downloading. Review the table below to pick the one that fits you.
| Feature | Seedless via Apple or Google | Traditional Seed Phrase |
|---|---|---|
| Login method | Apple ID or Google account plus a 4-digit PIN | Write down 12 words offline |
| Underlying technology | MPC (multi-party computation) | Standard private key cryptography |
| Account recovery | Same social account combined with your PIN | Enter the 12 written words |
| Seed phrase required? | No (optional export after setup) | Yes, from the first step |
| Best for | Beginners who find seed phrases intimidating | Users who want full self-custody control immediately |
The seedless method uses your existing Apple ID or Google account plus a 4-digit PIN. Under the hood, MPC technology divides the keys to your wallet into mathematical shares, meaning neither Apple, Google, nor Phantom can access your funds independently.
The traditional path generates a 12-word seed phrase that derives your private keys, giving unrestricted access to your funds on any compatible wallet app.
This applies to both paths: if you lose your PIN and your written phrase with no other logged-in device available, account recovery is impossible. Phantom support cannot reset your PIN or recover your funds. Choose the path that matches your comfort level.
How to Set Up Phantom Wallet the Seedless Way
Here are the steps for the seedless path.
- Download Phantom from phantom.com/download (mobile) or the Chrome Web Store (browser extension). Always use the official site.
- Open the app and tap Create a new wallet.
- Tap Continue with Google or Continue with Apple and sign in with your social account.
- Set a 4-digit PIN. You can reset your PIN from within the app later via Settings, then Security and Privacy, then Reset PIN. Phantom support cannot reset it remotely if you are locked out on a new device.
- Enable Face ID or fingerprint authentication for faster daily access.
- After setup, go to Settings, then Security and Privacy, then Show Recovery Phrase. Write down your 12 words offline and store them somewhere safe. This is your emergency backup, even on the seedless path.
How to Set Up Phantom Wallet with a Seed Phrase
For users who want traditional, direct control from the first step, here are the numbered steps.
- Download Phantom from phantom.com/download or the official app stores.
- Open the app and tap Create a new wallet.
- Tap Create a new wallet with recovery phrase.
- Write down all 12 words in the exact order shown. Offline only. Never take a photo or save to a cloud document or notes app.
- Complete the confirmation step where Phantom asks you to verify several specific words from your list.
- Set your PIN or password to lock the app on this device.
Security note: anyone who has your 12 words has complete, unrestricted access to your wallet. Treat that piece of paper like cash.
Finding Your Wallet Address After Setup
To fund your wallet, tap the token name on your dashboard (for example, SOL for Solana), then tap Receive. Your address and a QR code appear.
Important: your Solana address and your Ethereum address are completely different. Always confirm you are sharing the correct network address with whoever is sending you crypto. Sending to the wrong network address can result in permanent loss of funds. For the full step-by-step process, see our guide to receiving crypto.
Keeping Your Phantom Wallet Secure
- Never share your PIN or seed phrase with anyone, including anyone claiming to be Phantom support. Phantom staff will never ask for it.
- Phantom has built-in scam detection that flags suspicious transactions and known malicious sites before you approve them.
- Download Phantom only from phantom.com/download or the official app stores. Not from search ads or third-party sites.
- Back up your seed phrase offline even if you chose the seedless path.
- Once you start connecting to DeFi apps or NFT platforms, periodically review and revoke old wallet permissions. Our guide to revoking wallet permissions walks through the process.
You Are Ready to Use Solana (and More)
You now have self-custody access to Solana and seven other blockchain networks from a single app. That is the hardest part done.
You might start by transferring SOL from an exchange to cover basic network fees, then explore token swaps inside the app, or stake SOL for passive yield without leaving Phantom (APY varies by validator and network conditions).
